You do not need to be fit to get started, but everyone needs to pay attention to their body and work within their own limits. Your strength and fitness will improve gradually through practice.
Some people come to HEMA from other martial arts or sports but many people take it up with no background at all. Different body types and histories will have different advantages and disadvantages in using the sword.
Above all, playing with swords is fun!
You can also improve your strength and fitness, gain more body awareness, build confidence, learn about history, and meet new people.
HEMA is a very friendly activity and there is a strong UK and international community, with an active circuit of study events and tournaments you can attend.
There is an inherent risk in any contact sport but when properly handled HEMA is as safe, or safer, than most sports and martial arts.
An essential part of learning sword work is learning control and we use protective equipment as required.
There is flexibility to set your own level of contact and no-one is obliged to take part in any part of training they feel uncomfortable with.
Classes are held at William Loveless Hall, Wivenhoe, Essex, CO7 9AB
The venue is wheelchair accessible, has drinking water available and an accessible toilet which can double as a changing facility.
