Inclusion is at the heart of the club's ethos and we promote an open and safe environment for members to learn, develop their skills, and reach their own personal goals.
Our training is grounded in historical sources but we take a non-dogmatic approach and encourage students to cross-train and learn from different influences. Our members include everything from experienced martial artists to total beginners. Everyone is encouraged to train at their own pace, in line with their own needs and interests, and set a level of contact that they are comfortable with.
Training is delivered through a mix of games, structured drills, one to one coaching, and sparring/free fencing. Classes always include a substantial amount of free play as this is when we have the opportunity to be independent learners and develop our own personal skills and style.
Students are encouraged to do their own research on either historical texts or modern resources (online or at events), and bring this knowledge to share with the group.
The wider HEMA scene in the UK and abroad is very friendly and open to contact between different groups. There are regular events across the UK including seminars, sparring days, tournaments, and 'festival' style events, such as Fightcamp, with a wide range of activities and a really good social side.
Our members regularly attend these events and have a good network of friends and collaborators across the scene. This is a great opportunity to make new friends and learn from different influences!
Competition is just one element of HEMA practice and in no way required, however several of our members are active competitors in the UK tournament scene. Tournaments are a great way to test your skills under pressure, and face a wide range of different opponents and styles.
Our instructor Jon is an experienced competitor and medal winner across various weapons and provides specific coaching for tournament success.
Founded in 2021, Wivenhoe Hema is led by experienced HEMA practitioner and head coach Jon Middleton. Jon is an experienced instructor with over 15 years experience in HEMA and other martial arts. He is also one of the founders and organisers of the Wessex League, and Albion Cup, the UK's flagship tournament events. Outside of HEMA he is a professional neurodiversity coach, collaborating with clients to make the most of their strengths and work towards their goals.
We can offer one-to-one tailored lessons for students who want more personalised training. We can also arrange private group sessions for team building or one off group experiences. Take a look at what we can offer here.
